Grading, and Culvert Pipe

Last month our drainage team gave a customer a brand new backyard for their dogs to play in. There was a stormwater ditch that took up most of the back yard. Through expert grading and the installation of a culvert pipe to allow water to pass under the yard we were able to turn this muddy ditch into an backyard oasis.

First we did the math to calculate for the correct size pipe. It’s a big one! Second we checked with the city officials to make sure that this is a best stormwater management practice. They came out and gave their approval of the plan. Then we waited for a dry week to execute the project. We installed retaining walls on either end of the culvert pipe before the grading work so that the Culvert pipe can be accessed when needed. The new fence (not shown here) is installed over the retaining wall so the dogs can’t get out of the yard or into the culvert pipe. The grading work required more than 80 tons of soil. The culvert pipe is a heavy duty HDPE dual wall culvert pipe. We installed a french drain and catch basins to allow water from the yard into the culvert pipe.

At the end of the day thanks to grading, and culvert pipe we were able to really make the most out of this back yard. The customers couldn’t be happier and most importantly… The dogs love it!

Check out this great video of another company doing a similar job just with a much smaller pipe.
